Abstract

This article examines the interrelationship of mythonyms — onomastic units of mythological origin — and mythological metaphors from linguistic and cognitive perspectives. The study analyses the position of mythonyms within the lexical-semantic system of language and their influence on the formation of mythological metaphors. The research demonstrates the role of the mythonym in the process of metaphorisation, namely the transition of a mythological name into a generalised sign and the consequent generation of new metaphorical meanings. Drawing on material from Uzbek and English, the concept of the mythonymic metaphor is developed and its cognitive, semiotic, and cultural dimensions are described. The findings demonstrate that a systematic, bidirectional, and mutually conditioning relationship exists between mythonyms and mythological metaphors: mythonyms function as the source and foundation of metaphor, while metaphors in turn contribute to the preservation of mythonyms as living semantic units.
