Abstract

Transdisciplinary Methods (TASR) provides a systematic methodological framework for conducting research within Black and Africana Studies that integrates insights from multiple disciplines while foregrounding culturally grounded knowledge systems and historical analysis. In this volume, distinguished scholar James B. Stewart articulates the concept of Transdisciplinary Africana Studies Research (TASR)—an approach designed to address the limitations of traditional disciplinary frameworks when examining the experiences of people of African descent. By synthesizing social science analysis, historical inquiry, cultural interpretation, and community-based knowledge, TASR offers a research paradigm capable of generating deeper and more coherent interpretations of Black historical trajectories, social dynamics, and cultural production. The book outlines a set of structured research protocols and analytical frames that support the design and implementation of Africana Studies research projects. These include research frames such as Cultural Knowledge Excavation and Reinterpretation, Liberatory Concept Generation, Sankofan Historiography, and Cultural Continuity analysis, which provide scholars with practical strategies for conceptualizing research grounded in Africana Studies epistemology. Designed for graduate seminars, research methods courses, and advanced undergraduate programs, the text offers both conceptual guidance and practical tools for students and scholars seeking to design rigorous research projects within Africana Studies and related interdisciplinary fields. Volume 5 of the Little Black Book Series, this volume contributes to the development of the intellectual infrastructure of Africana Studies by strengthening methodological clarity, expanding research frameworks, and supporting the next generation of scholars engaged in the study of the African diaspora.
