Abstract
<jats:p>In this report, we investigate interstate migration patterns of working-age adults with a bachelor’s or graduate degree — referred to throughout this report as college-educated workers, college-educated individuals, or college-educated talent — and examine how these patterns differ by state, type of institution attended, level of educational attainment, major, occupation, and worker characteristics. We pay particular attention to homegrown talent, or talent that graduated from high school and college in the same state they now live. We draw primarily on large-scale survey data containing tens of thousands of responses about the transition from high school to college, and from college to the workforce, Providing a uniquely comprehensive picture of interstate talent migration. We then leverage multiple publicly available data sources to explore the individual- and state-level factors associated with talent flows.</jats:p>
