Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition affecting 10-15% of reproductive aged women with a diagnosis made when presenting with two of the following: 1) hyperandrogenism, 2) ovulatory dysfunction and/or 3) polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). PCOS is associated with increased visceral fat, obesity and insulin resistance, increasing the risk of reproductive and cardiometabolic complications. The authors advocate that exercise and a physically active lifestyle is essential for the management of PCOS and that CASES members and practitioners can play a significant role. However, there is not enough research evidence to convincingly provide an optimum prescription. The paper makes recommendations for future research including the need for more fully powered Randomised Controlled Trials and mechanistic studies that try to ascertain optimal prescriptions examining different modes of physical activity.
