Abstract

This article explores the Earth Charter as a comprehensive ethical framework that articulates biocentric, ecocentric and cosmocentric values, fundamental to confront the multiple environmental, social and spiritual crises of contemporary civilization. From its central principles, values such as respect, care, integrity, justice, inclusion, tolerance, compassion, peace and spirituality are identified as pillars of an ethic called here as the Ethics of the Living Whole. This ethical perspective acknowledges the intrinsic value of all forms of life, the sacredness of the universe, and the urgency of a profound cultural transformation. Far from being merely a declaration of principles, the Earth Charter emerges as an ethical guide for building planetary consciousness grounded on interdependence and complexity. The article also proposes understanding the Charter as an ecology of knowledge that intertwines complex, holistic, and systemic thinking with spirituality and transformative action. It calls for the awakening of a sensitive and co-responsible consciousness. Thus, it presents an ethical proposal that integrates reason, emotion, aesthetics, and meaning—capable of responding to the challenges of the 21st century from an affective, rational, and transformative perspective, in harmony with the Community of Life.
