Abstract

The correspondence of the Tůma brothers from 1893–1920 provides valuable evidence of the social context and the cultural, social, educational and other activities of the Czech enclave in New York. In three selected letters with a contextualizing introduction, we present and interpret the testimony of the found materials as a cultural-sociological probe that sheds a completely new, highly critical perspective on the everyday life of immigrants. In a partial way, the materials also contribute to our understanding of the amateur theatrical activities of expatriates overseas.
