Abstract
The article substantiates the feasibility of employing the Virtual Battlespace 4 (VBS4) simulation platform in the training system of tactical-level officers of the National Guard of Ukraine, with a particular focus on operations in urbanized environments. The study is grounded in contemporary approaches to military education that emphasize competence-based learning, adaptability, and decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. The complexity of modern urban warfare, characterized by dense infrastructure, multidomain interactions, and the presence of civilian populations, necessitates the use of advanced simulation tools capable of replicating realistic operational conditions. The limitations of traditional training methods are analyzed, including insufficient realism, logistical constraints, safety restrictions, and the inability to fully model ethical dilemmas and rapidly changing operational environments. In response to these challenges, VBS4 is being considered as an effective instrument for creating immersive, dynamic, and scalable training scenarios. Its capabilities include whole-earth virtual terrain generation, real-time environmental modification, modeling of four levels of urban combat (subterranean, surface, above-ground, and aerial), and integration of behavioral variables such as command delays and personnel losses. The article proposes a three-stage pedagogical model – «Theoretical Training - Virtual Simulation - Field Exercise» – which ensures a coherent transition from knowledge acquisition to practical skill application. Particular attention is paid to the role of after-action review and data-driven feedback in enhancing reflective learning and improving command performance. The prospects of integrating VBS4 with artificial intelligence, learning analytics, and immersive technologies are also outlined. Such integration is expected to enable personalized training trajectories, automated scenario generation, and deeper analysis of decision-making processes. Overall, the implementation of VBS4 is positioned as a key element of the digital transformation of military education, contributing to the development of resilient, adaptive, and ethically responsible officers capable of operating effectively in complex urban combat environments.
