Abstract

In recent years, international trade has entered a period of profound transformation shaped by two powerful and interrelated forces: digitalization and sustainability. Rapid advances in digital technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and digital platforms are redefining how trade processes are organized, monitored, and financed. At the same time, growing global awareness of environmental challenges and sustainability concerns has introduced new expectations, regulatory frameworks, and performance standards for international economic activities. Together, these developments are reshaping the institutional, technological, and financial foundations of global trade. This edited volume examines the evolving relationship between digital transformation and sustainability in international trade from a multidisciplinary perspective. The chapters bring together conceptual discussions, technological analyses, and institutional insights to explore how digital infrastructures and sustainability-oriented policies are influencing the organization and governance of global trade systems. Topics addressed in the book include the role of digital logistics infrastructure in improving sustainable trade performance, the emergence of the Digital Product Passport as a regulatory and transparency tool, the technological foundations of Industry 5.0, the organizational implications of digital transformation, and the transformation of sustainable finance mechanisms within the banking sector. Rather than treating digitalization and sustainability as separate developments, the book approaches them as interconnected processes that jointly shape the future of international trade. Digital technologies increasingly enable greater transparency, traceability, and coordination across global value chains, while sustainability agendas encourage firms and institutions to reconsider how economic activity can align with environmental and social responsibility. At the same time, these changes introduce new challenges related to governance, regulatory compliance, organizational adaptation, and financial restructuring. By integrating insights from international trade, logistics, management, and finance, this volume provides a comprehensive analytical framework for understanding how digitalization and sustainability interact within contemporary trade systems. The book aims to contribute to the academic literature while also offering practical insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to navigate the complex transition toward more digital, transparent, and sustainable forms of global trade.
