Abstract

Tourism is one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the global economy in the 21st century. It not only ensures a significant share of export revenues and GDP, but also contributes to employment growth, infrastructure development, and the strengthening of intercultural relations. International experience shows that in overcoming crises, tourism often serves as a key driver of economic recovery. After the sharp decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector rebounded in 2024, with international tourist arrivals reaching 1.4 billion and export revenues amounting to 1.9 trillion USD. For Armenia, the travel and tourism sector also has strategic importance. In 2023, its direct contribution to GDP was 5.5%. Domestic tourism has grown by more than 80% in recent years, while inbound tourism reached 2.2 million visitors in 2024, with an average spending of 1,142 USD per tourist. At the same time, outbound flows have maintained a growing trend, with Georgia, Russia, and Egypt being the main destinations. Thus, both international and Armenian experience confirm that tourism remains a key driver of economic growth and job creation; however, its full development requires continuous improvement of infrastructure.
