Abstract
Radiation physics and radiation protection form the foundation of diagnostic imaging and radiation-based healthcare practices. Every student pursuing Allied Health Sciences, particularly in disciplines such as Medical Radiography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, and related specialties, requires a sound understanding of these concepts to ensure safe, effective, and ethical patient care.Despite their importance, many learners find radiation physics challenging because of its mathematical complexity and abstract scientific principles. This book, "Radiation Physics and Protection Simplified for AHS Students," has been developed with the objective of presenting these concepts in a clear, concise, and student-friendly manner without compromising scientific accuracy. The content emphasizes conceptual understanding, practical relevance, and clinical application, making it particularly suitable for undergraduate students of Allied Health Sciences. The chapters progress systematically from the fundamentals of atomic structure, radiation, and radioactivity to radiation production, interactions with matter, radiation measurement, biological effects, radiation protection, imaging modalities, quality assurance, and regulatory guidelines. Every effort has been made to simplify technical concepts using easy-to-understand explanations, clinical examples, illustrations, and educational diagrams wherever appropriate. This book is intended not only to support university curricula but also to serve as a quick reference for educators, radiographers, radiologic technologists, interns, and healthcare professionals seeking a concise review of radiation physics and radiation safety principles. Special emphasis has been placed on the ALARA philosophy, patient safety, occupational radiation protection, and current regulatory practices that are essential in modern medical imaging. We sincerely hope that this book bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, inspires confidence among learners, and contributes to the development of competent healthcare professionals who prioritize both diagnostic excellence and radiation safety. We welcome constructive feedback and suggestions from readers and educators, which will help us improve future editions of this book.
