Abstract

Cancer is not only a disease of cells and tissues; it deeply affects the physical strength, emotional resilience, nutritional status, family life, and overall quality of living of individuals. In recent years, the need for safe, compassionate, evidence-aware, and patient-centered supportive care has become increasingly important. Along with advances in modern oncology, there is a growing responsibility to understand traditional systems of medicine with scientific discipline, clinical sensitivity, and ethical clarity. Phytotherapeutic Insights in Ayurvedic Oncology: Clinical Tools for Cancer Support and Wellness is a timely and meaningful contribution in this direction. The book attempts to bring together the classical wisdom of Ayurveda, the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants, and the practical requirements of cancer supportive care into a structured academic and clinical narrative. Its focus is not to replace standard oncological diagnosis or treatment, but to strengthen the understanding of supportive, preventive, rehabilitative, and wellness-oriented approaches that may help patients maintain strength, comfort, and quality of life when used judiciously and under appropriate professional guidance. A central strength of this work lies in its holistic framing of cancer care. Ayurveda does not view disease merely as a localised pathology; rather, it evaluates the individual through the interconnected dimensions of dosha, dhatu, agni, ojas, srotas, ahara, vihara, manas, and bala. In the context of oncology, this perspective encourages clinicians and scholars to consider digestion, nutrition, immunity, inflammation, tissue depletion, fatigue, sleep, psychological distress, treatment-related discomfort, and long-term wellness. Such a whole-person approach is especially relevant in cancer support, where the patient often requires care beyond tumour-directed therapy. The emphasis on phytotherapeutics is particularly valuable. Medicinal plants have occupied an important place in Ayurvedic therapeutics, Rasayana practice, recovery support, and health promotion. However, their use in cancer-related care demands responsibility, caution, and scientific maturity. This book is important because it encourages readers to think critically about indications, safety, drug-herb interactions, patient selection, dosage considerations, and the need for integrative communication between Ayurveda practitioners and oncology teams. In doing so, it promotes a balanced approach that respects traditional knowledge while remaining aligned with patient safety and contemporary clinical expectations. The book will be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students, Ayurveda clinicians, researchers, teachers, and integrative-health professionals who wish to understand the supportive role of phytotherapy in cancer care. It may also help academic institutions introduce more structured discussions on Ayurvedic oncology, clinical documentation, patient counselling, diet and lifestyle guidance, wellness care, and research possibilities in plant-based supportive interventions. Another important aspect of this volume is its practical orientation. By presenting cancer support and wellness through clinical tools, the book moves beyond theoretical discussion and guides the reader toward applied understanding. This is essential in a sensitive field like oncology, where every recommendation must be compassionate, realistic, safe, and tailored to the patient’s condition, stage of disease, ongoing treatment, strength, and preferences. I hope this work reaches students, scholars, clinicians, and healthcare professionals who are committed to responsible integrative care. May this book encourage thoughtful research, careful clinical application, respectful collaboration, and a humane approach to cancer support. Above all, may it contribute to the larger goal of improving comfort, confidence, dignity, and wellness for individuals facing cancer and for the families who care for them.
