Abstract

Research assessment strongly shapes academic culture: it should motivate excellent science rather than a publish or parish dilemma. The book “From Measurement to Understanding” explains why and how Masaryk University reformed its internal assessment of research and doctoral studies, and describes the experience of implementing this system. MU’s internal evaluation is values-driven, formative, and grounded in peer review. It provides expert feedback, supports strategic development, research quality, an inclusive culture, and evaluates doctoral programmes. The book critically reflects on the system’s impact and effectiveness, contributing to wider debates on meaningful research assessment and a culture of openness. It offers guidance for future assessment cycles at MU and inspiration for other institutions.
