Abstract

<jats:p>Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most influential technological developments in healthcare over the last decade. Dentistry, particularly periodontics, is increasingly integrating AI-driven systems into diagnostic procedures, radiographic analysis, treatment planning, prognosis assessment, patient communication, and digital workflows. Although enthusiasm surrounding AI continues to grow, concerns regarding reliability, ethics, clinical applicability, and over-dependence remain equally significant. In periodontics, where diagnosis often depends on clinical judgment, radiographic interpretation, and risk evaluation, AI offers the possibility of improving precision and consistency. Considering that periodontitis is a multifactorial disease, the occurrence, progression, and presence of the condition can potentially be identified earlier and more efficiently through artificial intelligence algorithms. These systems are capable of integrating multiple diagnostic parameters required for accurate assessment, which may be challenging for clinicians to recall and analyze simultaneously. At the same time, many clinicians question whether these technologies can truly replicate the decision-making abilities, intuition, and empathy of trained professionals. The question still remains in every mind whether it can be a boon to a good periodontal practice growth and diagnosis or is going to hamper the genuinity of the field and professionalism related to the field of periodontics. This chapter critically examines the present and future role of artificial intelligence in periodontics. It discusses the scientific basis of AI, current clinical applications, benefits, limitations, ethical considerations, and future directions with few flowcharts and images that can portary the future of AI and its benefits while exploring whether AI should be viewed as a temporary technological trend or a transformative advancement in periodontal healthcare.</jats:p>
