Abstract
<jats:p>The global water crisis is a severe situation where 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water and 4.2 billion lack access to adequate sanitation facilities. While the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set Goal 6 as “Ensure access to safe and clean water and sanitation for all,” achieving it remains difficult. The sand dam initiative in Kenya and the revitalized irrigation channels in Afghanistan show effectiveness, In Kenya, where approximately 80% of the land is arid or semi-arid, during the dry season, women and children must walk about 5 km to fetch water. A sand dam is a structure that uses concrete weirs to capture water and sediment carried by the intense flow of rivers during the rainy season only, storing a large volume of water (40% of the sediment layer) within the sand. Sand dams are low-cost to build, allow residents to participate in construction, and are easy to maintain as they learn the techniques. These successes highlight the importance of mission-driven engagement, local research, collaborative planning, and sustainable technology transfer. Together, these elements are key to building enduring systems for health, livelihoods, and ecological balance. These efforts show that technology transfer is not just about tools, but about “thinking and building together.” It brings values like youth learning, women’s empowerment, and community renewal. The SDGs’ water supply goals remain difficult to achieve. For this reason, community-based successes are reliable guides for the future. Solutions to water issues involve not only technology and systems but also human dignity and solidarity.</jats:p>
