Abstract

Stéphane Mallarmé’s poetry remains as modern as ever – not least because of his ambition to use poetry to create music. The composer Pierre Boulez builds on this thinking in a particularly impressive way. The monograph traces the musical quality of Mallarmé’s poetry and illustrates how Boulez transposed Mallarmé’s verbal music into a musical language that sheds new light on its poetic foundation. Using the example of the composition„Pli selon pli. Portrait de Mallarmé“, it analyses the symbiotic relationship between music and poetry and outlines Mallarmé and Boulez as influential thinkers of French modernism in the sense of transdisciplinary comparative studies.
