Abstract

An enriching read for all those who would like to take a closer look at Johann Sebastian Bach’s fascinating compositional workshop: Bach used the song melody, which for us today is primarily connoted with the text “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden”, in his cantatas and oratorios many times and in many different ways. This study examines Bach’s compositional creativity using the above example and sheds light on his astonishing musical-theological mediation skills. Supported by numerous historical documents, it can be shown how deeply and elementally Bach felt connected to the German Protestant hymnody of his time.
