<p>Following Bolzano’s dismissal, *Athanasia*—the first of his major works—was published anonymously in 1827. Although this publication was inspired by the death of a daughter of Anna Hoffmann—who would later become his “life-sustainer”—it is not a book of consolation, but rather a theoretical exposition of the “Reasons for the Immortality of the Soul,” in which Bolzano clarifies, not least, fundamental concepts such as “substance” and “adherence.” A good decade later, Bolzano (now under his own name) published a second edition, which he expanded with new notes and commentaries on relevant recent publications. This edition serves as the basis for the present volume.</p>
