Abstract

Three German research vessels named “Meteor” have been in service from the 1920s to the present day. The book shows how a scientific community with its own rules and culture developed around these large floating research facilities. Using the three ships as examples, the book illustrates how and why marine research was conducted in Germany at different points in the 20th century. To this end, not only the institutional environment, research content, technology used, and research practices are examined, but also the question of how the scientific view of the ocean has changed. The work thus combines approaches from the history of science, technology, and the environment.
