Abstract

As eloquent and touching as the story of Miasli, the child of the Verdingkind who grows up to become Jeremias Gotthelf, is in the first edition of the novel ‘Der Bauern-Spiegel’, its author Albert Bitzius seems to have been less than satisfied with the still bumpy first form. Just two years after the first publication in 1837, the author, who now called himself Jeremias Gotthelf after his character, published an improved new edition. The edition in the HKG offers the versions of 1837 and 1839 in a synoptic edition, so that the differences can be understood paragraph by paragraph. The edition also offers a selection of printed extracts of the popular novel as they appeared in contemporary journals.
