Abstract

In 2016, during construction works in the Avan administrative district (address: A. Shahinyan Street, 95/12) of Yerevan, three pairs of large karrases (very large jars for wine) were discovered. As a result of the excavations, it was established that the found object was a wine cellar, and the newly found karrases testify to the existence of a wine press in this area in the 12th-13th centuries. Medieval manuscripts contain extensive information on viticulture in Armenia, the study of which shows that the Ararat Valley, Vayots Dzor, Lori, Artsakh, etc. were areas of active winemaking. The recently discovered karrases supplement our knowledge of the winemaking centers registered to this day in the territory of Yerevan.
