Abstract
<jats:p> <jats:italic>Three Humanist Compendia in Icelandic Translation</jats:italic> presents selected Icelandic translations of three works by the Danish printer, publisher, and compiler Hans Hansen Skonning (1579–1651): <jats:italic>Collegium Philosophorum</jats:italic> (1636), <jats:italic>Mirabilia Naturalia</jats:italic> (1639), and <jats:italic>Geographia Historica Orientalis</jats:italic> (1641). </jats:p> <jats:p>Preserved in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Icelandic manuscripts, these texts offer a rare glimpse into the transmission of humanist learning between Denmark and Iceland. Drawing on a wide range of Latin and German sources, Skonning’s compendia brought together material on philosophy, natural wonders, geography, history, and ethnography. Their Icelandic translations testify to a sustained interest in European scholarly culture among Icelandic readers and scribes.</jats:p> <jats:p>The volume presents diplomatic editions of selected texts, lightly normalised for readability, together with the corresponding Danish originals, accompanied by studies of the manuscripts, the translators, and the intellectual traditions underlying the compendia.</jats:p>
