Abstract
We’ve been here before, during the Cold War: nations across the world ramping up their arsenals of military weapons and entering into a deadly spiral of threats of mutual destruction.
At the end of the Cold War, we finally managed to defuse the situation and turn armament into disarmament, but many of the valuable lessons the world learnt then have since been forgotten.
The world is currently at a tipping point, poised to yet again be caught up in the spiral of armament – but it’s early stages yet, and we still have time to alter the course if we act now, before the chance is lost.
Det stærkeste forsvar (‘The Strongest Defence’) shows a way out of this state of eternal threat that states create by ever upping their capacity for military deterrence. The goal is to make each country’s defence stronger than its offence, removing the attractiveness of carrying out offensive strikes – only in doing so can we rebuild mutual trust between the nations of the world.
