Abstract
The chanting tradition of the Armash monastery, located in Asia Minor, plays a fundamental role in Armenian sacred chanting art. The study of surviving manuscripts written down in New Armenian notation by the renowned musician Hambartsum Cherchyan and his students, allows us to identify many valuable recordings. In this context, of particular interest are the newly discovered by us sharakans – two “praises” dedicated to Armenian martyred heroes – reflecting two significant stages in the history of Armenian sacred songwriting. The first of them is the sharakan “I Wonder”, authored by Khosrovidukht (VIII century), one of the first female hymnographers, a descendant of the famous Goghtan singers; she dedicated her work to the memory of her brother Prince Vahan Goghtnatsi. The second is the sharakan «We Sing You Songs» by St. Nerses Shnorhali (XII century) from the Canon to Saint Ghevond and his fellow-priests. The detailed analysis of the musical components of these two masterpieces confirms that they are reliable samples containing older and authentic layers of Armenian chanting art. In the course of comparative work, in similar recordings of other musicians N. Tashchyan and E. Tntesyan, we identified many intricately interwoven and excessively ornate melodic turns, incorporated into the musical texture of sharakans in later periods.
