Abstract
Almost all countries worldwide face the challenge of steadily increasing volumes of solid waste. According to the World Bank, approximately 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste are generated globally each year, about 33% of which is not properly managed. A substantial share of this waste consists of organic materials (accounting for around 44% in developed countries and up to 64% in developing countries) whose environmental and socio-economic impacts are particularly significant, primarily due to increased methane emissions and associated climate risks.
