Abstract

The article examines the concept of memory in Julian Barnes’ novel The Sense of an Ending, where the chronotope is a creative tool unifying the main idea of the novel. Chronotopic units are formed at the unique intersection of time and space, creating inimitable artistic reality. The chronotope is presented as a “transformation” modifying the imaginary and the real. The author mixes reality and memory, complicates the content of events, and creates a new world where the past and present merge, forming a multi-layered reality. This convergence challenges the reliability of personal memory and redefines narrative truth, illustrating how subjective recollection shapes identity and perception. The chronotope thus serves not merely as a structural device but as a lens through which the narrative interrogates the nature of memory, guilt, and the passage of time.
