Abstract

The article examines key issues related to the lifestyle and living conditions of the special contingent residing in five penitentiary institutions of the Republic of Armenia: «Abovyan», «Vardashen», «Sevan», «Nubarashen» and «Armavir»․ According to the survey results, the sample was predominantly composed of men (96,9%) and individuals of working age (66,8% aged 18–44). The majority had secondary education (65,6%) and were characterized by pronounced socio-economic vulnerability: lack of a profession was identified in 34,7% of respondents, and absence of work experience in 44,7%. The presence of chronic diseases was reported by 45,4% of the convicted individuals, while more than one third did not comply with medical prescriptions. Living conditions were generally assessed as satisfactory; however, significant sanitary and hygienic problems were identified, including a high prevalence of insects (80,2%), limited access to running water (46,2%), and a shortage of sanitary and technical facilities (76,3%). The dietary regimen was characterized by a low frequency of meals (1–2 times per day in 66,4% of cases), frequent skipping of breakfast (50,4%), and a widespread practice of excessive salt consumption. The prevalence of tobacco use was extremely high (82,1%). The obtained results describe the living conditions, educational, healthcare, and social opportunities of individuals deprived of liberty in penitentiary institutions.
