<jats:p>The article brings together, classifies, and divides into functional groups the beliefs related to the hoopoe bird, as reflected in Armenian folk legends recorded in the 19th–21st centuries. Folkloric materials show that the image of the hoopoe has significant functional similarities with female water spirits – such as mermaids, sirens, and others.</jats:p>
