Abstract

The folk literary culture of each historical-ethnographic region of Armenia has its own distinct character. Among other provinces of historical Armenia, the Kars-Shirak region stands out with its dialect and speech patterns. The socio-economic and climatic conditions of the region, its geographical position, and linguistic mentality have left their mark on the folk heritage. The report is based on material from the narrative genres of folk literature from the Kars and Shirak regions, published in the collections "Kars: Armenian Folk Culture" and "Shirak: Armenian Folk Culture." The study examined fairy tales, realistic tales, animal tales, conversations, humorous stories, memoirs, and traditions. Although some folklore collectors (Hrach Mkrtchyan, Anushavan Gevorgyan, Yeghishe Khachatryan, Paruyr Barseghyan) recorded materials relating to both regions, these materials are distinguished by speech patterns characteristic of the given region and local plot developments, conditioned by the narrator's origin and place of residence. In some narratives of the Kars-Shirak region, the influence of folk materials transmitted through the memory of narrators who migrated from certain provinces of Western Armenia (Mush, Van, Erzurum) can be felt.
