Abstract
The central-domed church of the Ani citadel plays an important role in revealing the architectural image of the city and its multi-layered Armenian architecture. Based on the field work carried out and subsequent analysis, some architectural observations are put forward, which are manifested in planning, volumetric-spatial, relational and other solutions. Methods and materials: In this study, comparative architectural typology, as well as methods of correlation and analysis of primary sources, have been employed. Analysis: A comparative analysis has been carried out of the building’s planimetric, spatial, compositional, and other architectural solutions-both with similar structures preserved in Ani and with the multi-apse churches of the historical province of Tayk. A stratigraphic analysis of Abukhan’s masonry has also been conducted, based on the results of the field research. Results: Based on observations and comprehensive analysis, at least two architectural layers of the structure are assumed: the Bagratuni and Zakaryan periods. The basis of all this is also a comparative analysis of construction styles. A significant finding is the presence of craftsmen’s marks on the structures. The article is based on the author’s fieldwork and subsequent post-field architectural analyses.
