Abstract
In the contemporary folklore of Shirak, the most vibrant genre is the khaghik or dance song. As in other folklore genres, khaghiks contain stable units that are products of formulaic thinking. These can be observed on various levels. Particularly prominent are the formulaic expressions found in the refrains and repeated lines of these songs. In this article, we examine the formulaic structures of vijak (fortune-telling) songs widespread in Shirak as essential components of traditional folklore. Within the scope of this study, we will specifically analyze the folk khaghiks related to the Hambardzum (Ascension) festival. Methods and Materials: The khaghiks of Shirak that are part of the Hambardzum ritual system have been studied using historical-comparative, folkloristic-textological, and musicological methods. Analysis: Recordings of vijak songs from different periods were analyzed and compared with the compositional features of other khaghiks. Results:The modern manifestations of khaghiks in Shirak bear key characteristics of formulaic thinking. Moreover, their function has significantly expanded due to shifts in the ritual context. Authors’ Contributions: The research was carried out with the direct involvement of both authors. The first author contributed to the formulation of the folkloristic material and the theoretical section, while the second author was responsible for the transcription of the collected musical materials and the ethnomusicological analysis.
