Abstract

The 2nd South African Infantry Division’s exploits during the Second World War have long been neglected by military historians. As the division responsible for the defence of Tobruk in June 1942, its subsequent defeat by Erwin Rommel along with the capture of 10 722 members of the division remains South Africa’s greatest military defeat. This is, however, only a small segment of a much larger story, which for the first time has now been researched and made available for readers to make up their own minds concerning the facts surrounding not only the events of Tobruk, but the divisions entire military service during the Second World War.
