Abstract

After serving briefly on the Bosnian front in World War I, László became a propagandist at the Imperial and Royal War Press Headquarters in Vienna, as described in chapter 8. As an experienced journalist and creative writer, he quickly climbed the ladder at Press Headquarters, becoming one of its chief propagandists by 1918. The military government established its own weekly paper for him, which was published in Vienna, Budapest, and Pozsony (Bratislava). As the editor of the Üzenet ( Message ), László’s task was to influence soldiers on the front and to disseminate information which would deflect his readers’ attention from reports describing the empire’s increasingly dire military situation.
