Abstract
The paper examines cases of variation in the syntactic use of capital letters, specifically those involving an initial uppercase after a colon in headlines of journalistic and specialised texts. The analysis identifies a growing tendency toward broader use of the colon, with the following text often beginning with an uppercase letter. In some head-lines, a stable pattern has emerged, whereas in others, as well as in specialised texts, capitalisation after a colon alternates with lowercase letters in accordance with established codified norms.
