Abstract
<jats:p>Nathanael Pringsheim was one of the formative figures in nineteenth-century botany. This book reconstructs his scientific biography, his research on plant sexuality and development, and his far-reaching institutional and family legacy. At its center is Pringsheim’s microscopic observation of fertilization in algae. His studies of Vaucheria, Oedogonium, Pandorina, and Coleochaete revealed internal and external fertilization as well as the alternation between sexual and spore-forming generations. In doing so, he played a decisive role in establishing that sexual reproduction is not confined to animals and “higher” plants.</jats:p> <jats:p>The book situates this work within the transition from natural philosophy and descriptive natural history to cell theory, experimental botany, and evolutionary biology. Pringsheim’s research was empirical, microscopic, and developmental in approach, while his interpretation of organic form remained influenced by Goethean idealistic morphology. The reproductive cycles of land plants emerge as evolutionary variations on patterns already present in green algae: the gametophyte dominates in mosses, the sporophyte in ferns and seed plants, while pollen tubes and protected ovules make fertilization increasingly independent of freely available water.</jats:p> <jats:p>Pringsheim’s career also reveals both the opportunities and the limitations faced by Jewish scientists in the nineteenth century. Despite academic discrimination, he established a private laboratory, initiated an early institute of plant physiology in Jena, founded a botanical journal, and helped build the German Botanical Society. His negotiating skill was instrumental in establishing the Biological Research Institute on Helgoland, which developed into an internationally important center for marine and fisheries biology.</jats:p> <jats:p>The history of the Pringsheim family links contributions to chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology with the experience of disenfranchisement, emigration, and persecution under National Socialism. A separate chapter presents Pringsheim’s microscopic drawings as both instruments of scientific inquiry and works of aesthetic distinction. Original documents concerning his teaching, institutional ambitions, and personal contacts complete the account. The result is a portrait of a scientist at the threshold of modern biology who brought together empirical observation, institution building, and visual knowledge.</jats:p>
