The focus is on Julius Ruska, the Berlin Institute for the History of Medicine and the Natural Sciences, the Leibniz Commission, and Joseph Ehrenfried Hofmann. The essay reveals early, politically and institutionally fragile beginnings of a field that was permanently reestablished in Berlin only in 1969.</jats:p>
