Abstract

Demographic ageing is one of the most complex challenges in modern societies, with significant consequences for their social, economic and health systems. In this context, the province of Quebec in Canada is experiencing a substantial rise in the proportion of the elderly in its total population, which requires a thorough institutional and professional response. However, population ageing should not be viewed solely as a burden; it also presents an opportunity to redefine intergenerational relationships, improve the social welfare system and promote active ageing. This article highlights key demographic indicators in Quebec, different forms of institutional and informal housing, the importance of gerontological social work, and educational programmes that contribute to the development of professional skills for working with the elderly. The aim is to shed light on the challenges and opportunities that demographic ageing presents in the context of sustainable and equitable social development, using available data and professional literature as a reference point.
