Abstract
<jats:p>This paper deals with the chronology of choral singing in Aleksinac from the mid-19th century to the present day. Throughout this period, choral music has been continuously present and played a prominent role in cultural events in Aleksinac. The history of all church and secular choirs in Aleksinac is presented, from the founding of the Church of Saint Nikola in 1837 to the present. Choral singing was initially performed in elementary schools, later in Aleksinac Grammar School, and from 1896, also in the Teacher’s Training School. The founding and history of all choral societies in Aleksinac that made significant contributions to the development of choral music are shown. The most important role played the Aleksinac Choral Society ”Sumatovac,” with its 130 year history spanning from 1887 when it was founded. During the 20th and 21st centuries, other significant contributions to choral singing in Aleksinac were made by the Church Choir ”Sveti Nikola” the Mixed Chamber Choir ”Pevnica,” the Youth Choir of the Cultural Center , the Children’s Choir ”Mali Vokali” of the Cultural Center, the ”Spiritual Academy” in Lipovac, and the Choir of the Music School ”Vladimir Djordjevic.” The major performances of Aleksinac’s choral societies, both domestically and internationally, as well as the awards they won at competitions and the conductors who led the choirs, are also presented.</jats:p>
