Abstract
Due to ecological problems like ozone depletion and global warming potential certain refrigerant like R-12 has to be replaced. HCFC’s (Hydro Choro Fluor Carbons) have been identified as prime foremost cause of ozone depletion. HFC’s (Hydro Fluor Carbons) are substantially less damaging to ozone layer than HCFC’s. Several Refrigerants have emerged as a substitute to R-12. The most widely used Flour Carbon refrigerants are R-134a, R-407c, R-410a, R-407a and R-438a. In the present work R-134a is used as alternative for R-12. The energy performance of a domestic refrigerator has been assessed experimentally by a novel design of a shell and tube water cooled condenser with a secondary refrigerant naturally circulating in a cycle. In the present work experimental investigation can be made on shell and tube water cooled condenser for enhancing Coefficient of Performance. This can be achieved by immersing the condenser coils of domestic refrigerator in a shell which contains water open to atmosphere. This shell is enclosed by another shell which contains acetone (C3H6O) for extracting the heat from water and it works on natural circulation. By performing this experiment, considerable amount Coefficient of Performance has increased when compared to air cooled condenser.
