Abstract

Oral surgery is becoming increasingly important and is taking centre stage in oral health training for professionals. It is a practical discipline where the teaching focuses on the care of patients in university clinics. The subject of oral surgery aims to give the dentistry student the essential knowledge about the pathologies that can occur in the buccal and maxillofacial region as well as explaining their aetiology, physiopathology and clinical treatment. The content of this practical manual enables the student to apply their knowledge of oral surgery to perform a correct diagnosis and apply the proper treatment for oral and maxillofacial pathologies. Throughout the subject, students need to demonstrate the knowledge of the instruments and the materials used in various oral surgery treatments. They gain knowledge on how to design a periodontal flap, identify the various types of sutures, as well as how to formulate a surgical treatment plan to resolve the corresponding pathological process. This manual is intended to help undergraduate students during their studies, as well as being a reference book. The inclusion of practical exercises in the manual will reinforce the theoretical appreciation of oral surgery. The eight chapters that compose the manual cover the subject from the instruments required for performing basic surgery to the beginning of more complex surgeries and describe the soft tissue procedures applicable to the oral cavity.
