Abstract

The representation of women in the media constitutes one of the important research topics in the field of media. The aim of this study is to reveal the scientific trends, conceptual structure and academic dynamics in the field by systematically examining the studies on the representation of women in the media through bibliometric analysis method. For this purpose, the literature on the representation of women in the media was analyzed through performance and science mapping analyses. The analyses were carried out using the R programming language. Within the scope of the research, 1087 articles published between 1981–2024 and searched in the Web of Science database were analyzed. According to the research findings, it was revealed that there was an increase in the number of publications on women’s representation in the media after 2011; the most productive journal was ‘Feminist Media Studies’ and the most influential journal was ‘Sex Roles’. Marika Tiggemann was found to be both the most productive and the most cited author with six articles. When the distribution of publications by country was analyzed, it was found that the USA was the country that produced the most publications. In the analysis of cooperation between countries, it was determined that the USA is at the centre and has multilateral cooperation with many countries. The most frequently repeated keywords in studies on women’s representation in the media are ‘gender’ and ‘social media’. In recent years, concepts such as ‘family’, ‘gender-based violence’, ‘media coverage’, ‘social media’, ‘content analysis’, and ‘race’ have come to the fore. The most cited paper was the article titled “Social media effects on young women’s body image concerns: Theoretical perspectives and an agenda for research” by R. M. Perloff in 2014.
