Abstract
This chapter critically examines the profound influence of local terminologies used within families, educational institutions, and healthcare settings on the perpetuation of stigma and stereotypes towards individuals with disabilities. Drawing from frameworks in Critical Disability Studies (CDS), it explores how language, cultural beliefs, and institutional practices contribute to the marginalization of disabled individuals by reinforcing harmful labels and assumptions. Terms often employed to describe people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs), mental health conditions, or physical disabilities are not merely descriptive; they carry significant social implications that can exacerbate social exclusion, self-stigmatization, and barriers to accessing essential support and services.
