Abstract

This chapter examines how Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) is reshaping teaching practices and professional development in special education. Drawing on current literature in inclusive education, educational technology, and professional learning, the chapter argues that Gen-AI integration should be understood as a process of pedagogical reframing rather than mere technological adoption. Five interconnected themes are addressed: the complexity of professional identity in special education; the affordances and risks of Gen-AI for instructional practice; competency frameworks for professional development; ethical, legal, and safeguarding responsibilities; and institutional conditions for responsible AI adoption. The chapter concludes that human-centered expertise, sustained professional learning, and ethical clarity remain foundational to inclusive education in an AI-enhanced era.
