Abstract

Black women's contributions to the field of international relations remain overlooked and understudied. This remains even more true for Black women holding radical politics and involved in grassroots organizing outside of and in opposition to the dominant institutions from which foreign policy decisions are developed and enacted. This book chapter aims to shed more light on such women, specifically by examining the life and work of activist and intellectual Claudia Jones. Jones served at the forefront of various struggles against race, gender, and class oppression. Her intellectual work and activism represented a challenge to U.S. hegemony in a postwar era, in which Black people domestically were still suffering from Jim Crow policies. Jones' efforts to link the struggles of Black people to those of different groups of oppressed people internationally was one of the ways in which she embodied a mid-twentieth century Black internationalist politics that still resonates for many of today's activists, organizations, and movements.
