Abstract
The current study examines the impact of ChatGPT on the research autonomy of Moroccan PhD students through the lenses of Self-Determination Theory, the Technology Acceptance Model, and Cognitive Load Theory. Survey results show that students perceive ChatGPT as both useful and easy to use, especially in writing and idea generation. In addition, many report overdependence and concerns over information accuracy. These findings highlight the importance of balancing AI use with the development of vital doctoral skills such as independent decision making and analytical thinking. Ultimately, while ChatGPT enhances research efficiency, its use must be critically managed to preserve the autonomy and intellectual rigor fundamental to PhD students.
