Abstract
This chapter examines the presence and patterns of gender bias in board textbooks used across Classes I to VIII in Indian elementary schools. Through a qualitative analysis of textual and visual content in English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Social Science, and Science books, the research identifies persistent stereotypes that portray men and boys in dominant, active, and professional roles, while women and girls are depicted in domestic, passive, or subordinated positions. Visual underrepresentation of female characters further reinforces implicit hierarchies. The study underscores the significant influence of textbooks as agents of socialization and highlights the need for gender-sensitive educational material. It calls for balanced, inclusive representations to foster equity, reshape societal attitudes, and ensure that early education contributes to dismantling—rather than reinforcing—gender stereotypes.
