Abstract

The chapter presents a historical and literary examination of doomed/damned women, offering insights into how both literary characters and historical figures are depicted as tragic figures, particularly in the context of being doomed or damned, and are often discriminated against in fiction that reflects the norms of the period. The scholarship is examined from both historical and contemporary perspectives to explore various depictions of historical figures and fictional women in literature that represent doomed/damned women as fallen, cursed, oppressed, silenced, and dispossessed. Implications are also offered for these representations from the perspectives of women writers and through a feminist literary criticism lens.
