Abstract
This study examines contemporary folklore and puppetry as strategies to strengthen mother tongue instruction in Namibian early grades. The chapter is grounded in socio-cultural and semiotic perspectives. It uses multimodal analysis of a shadow puppet performance and teacher focus group interviews. Findings show puppetry enhances oral expression, literacy, and cultural identity but faces resource and training barriers. Professional development and culturally responsive practices are recommended to support mother tongue education.
