Abstract
Although the YoruÌbaì communal system is an integral and fundamental part of their continued existence and survival, nevertheless, they are still of their culture. The concept of YoruÌbaì history and identity is synonymous in the African cultural milieu. It is adequate to say that the YoruÌbaì people lived and are well organized in lineages rather than towns. This study focuses on the sociological analysis of the YoruÌbaì history, characteristics of the identity of the YoruÌbaì people, which has been their legacy, and common. Findings show that lineage's praise-poetry, “oriìkiÌ-oriìleÌò,” though a very long process with mythological history and the highest ideal of human experience and phenomenal exponential narratives, remains the logical and key element in understanding and tracing the genealogy of the YoruÌbaì people. This paper concludes that the progenitor and ancestors of the YoruÌbaì tribe might have intended to establish a nation that would be in contrast to the contemporary modern society, due to their tradition of a communal lifestyle
