Abstract
<jats:p>Recent advances in the CRISPR-Cas system of genome editing have led to a breakthrough in the ability to precisely modify the plant microbiome and interactions between plants and microorganisms. Modifying plant and microbe communities using the CRISPR technology has the potential to enhance agricultural production, thus minimizing the excessive application of chemicals as fertilizers and pesticides. This is a powerful strategy that has shown promise in increasing the ability of beneficial microorganisms to fix atmospheric nitrogen and dissolve insoluble phosphates. Moreover, the integration of CRISPR technology with synthetic biology, metagenomics, and multi-omics has provided a new perspective on developing microbiome engineering for agriculture.</jats:p>
