Abstract

Doctoral research is increasingly shaped by the everyday presence of artificial intelligence, influencing how scholars think, write, manage uncertainty, and engage with supervision. This chapter examines the cognitive, emotional, and relational shifts that arise as doctoral students enter research with early clarity, structured thinking, and AI-supported confidence rather than prolonged ambiguity. While this transformation can reduce anxiety and sustain momentum, it also raises critical questions about independence, originality, and research quality. Drawing on doctoral education literature and supervisory perspectives, the chapter argues that fear-driven and prohibition-based institutional responses weaken trust and obscure learning processes. Instead, it reframes AI as part of the contemporary scholarly infrastructure requiring interpretive guidance. A collaborative research quality model is proposed to demonstrate how autonomy, methodological integrity, transparent supervision, and intellectual maturation can be strengthened through guided AI integration.
